More than half of Ukraine’s electricity production capacity was destroyed in the Russian attacks.
The United Nations (UN) does not have the funds it needs to help Ukrainians this winter, at a time when the country is experiencing energy shortages. This was announced on Thursday, September 26, by the representative of the UN refugee agency (UNHCR), Caroline Lindholm Billing.
“The level of funding for organizations like ours is too low for this time of year,” the official explained.
He clarified that UNHCR has only 47% of the funds needed to help millions of Ukrainians displaced or affected by the war.
“Last year, this program was currently 70% funded,” Billing said.
He added that there are now approximately 3.6 million internally displaced people (IDPs) in Ukraine, but the shelling of infrastructure and the activation of Russian troops lead to new population movements, and therefore the number of people who need help is growing.
“Almost 99 thousand people, for example, have been displaced or have left front-line villages in the Donetsk region since August 1,” he said.
In Germany, the Budget Committee of the Bundestag on September 25 approved an aid package to Ukraine totaling 70 million euros. The funds are intended to support the heat and electricity supply sector.
Let’s recall that President Vladimir Zelensky told the UN Security Council that Russia was preparing attacks on Ukrainian nuclear power plants. It is for these purposes that it can use images from Chinese satellites.
