On September 20, the Israel Defense Forces attacked the Lebanese Hezbollah group’s top command in Beirut.
The IDF said the head of the elite unit, Radwan Ibrahim Aqila, and other unit commanders were killed in an attack on a stronghold of the group’s members in southern Beirut. The Livnu Foreign Ministry said the attack killed eight people and wounded 59, Axios, The Times of Israel and RFI reported.
It is noted that Aqila was one of the founders of Hezbollah’s military wing. Since 2004, he headed the group’s operational department and was responsible for bombing, anti-tank missile attacks, air defense and other military areas. He held the third position in the organization’s hierarchy.
The US believes Aqeela is involved in the April 1983 bombings of the US embassy in Beirut that killed 63 people. He is also suspected of being involved in the October 1983 bombings of the US Marine barracks that killed 241 servicemen.
Israel says the killing is a “massive blow” to Hezbollah’s military command and control structure.
As you know, Israel shares a northern border with Lebanon, where the Iranian-backed Hezbollah group operates. They have been attacking each other since the Gaza war began in October 2023.
Recall that on September 19, the IDF attacked Lebanese Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon. Earlier, Israel announced that it was expanding the goals of its war in the Gaza Strip against Hamas to include Hezbollah, Hamas’s ally in Lebanon.
