According to preliminary estimates, a quarter of Ukraine’s territory is contaminated with unexploded mines and other munitions.
In Switzerland, in Lausanne, on October 17-18, the Ukrainian Conference on Mine Action (UMAC2024) will be held. This was announced by the Swiss Federal Council on Monday, September 16.
“Since the start of the war in February 2022, Ukraine has become one of the countries with the most mines in the world. It is estimated that almost a quarter of its territory – an area three times the size of Switzerland – is contaminated by mines and other more explosive objects,” the report said.
The conference on mine action in Ukraine UMAC2024 will be attended by officials, representatives of international organizations, the private sector and the scientific community.
Switzerland will be represented by the President of the Swiss Confederation, Viola Amgerd, who will open the conference, and the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ignazio Cassis.
“The event, coordinated by Switzerland in Ukraine, will focus on the global aspects of humanitarian demining, including three main pillars: people, partners and development,” the statement said.
The purpose of UMAC2024 is to discuss the role of mine action and its innovative technologies.
Ukraine is the most mined state in the world – potentially 176,000 square kilometers of territory.
