The US emphasized that officials prevented transparent elections and concealed the true results of the vote.
The United States has announced sanctions and visa restrictions against 16 officials linked to Nicolas Maduro’s regime in Venezuela over their involvement in presidential election fraud. The US State Department reported this on Thursday, September 12.
The sanctions affected the leaders of Venezuela’s National Electoral Council, the Supreme Tribunal of Justice and the National Assembly linked to Maduro.
According to the US Treasury Department, these officials obstructed the conduct of transparent elections and concealed the true results of the vote.
In addition to the sanctions, the State Department imposed visa restrictions on these officials.
It will be recalled that on July 29, the current President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, was declared the winner of the elections with 51% of the vote, compared to 44% for the opposition leader, Edmund Gonzalez. Opposition parties say their candidate won 70% of the vote.
After the announcement of the results of the presidential election, spontaneous rallies began in the country. Their participants believe that the authorities rigged the voting results in favor of Maduro.
