Refusal of medals will help save funds in the state budget. At the same time, instead of medals, schools will be able to reward the best students with their own distinctions.
The Verkhovna Rada Committee on Education and Science recommends abolishing the production and presentation of state-issued gold and silver medals in schools. This was reported by MP Natalya Pipa.
“In recent years, the number of medals has increased, but at the same time, the gaps in education and the decrease in the level of knowledge of school graduates during the Covid and the Great War still exist this anachronism in post-Soviet countries,” he said.
According to the representative, awarding medals will help save funds in the state budget. At the same time, instead of medals, schools will be able to reward the best students with their own distinctions.
According to the Educational Ombudsman, last year UAH 1.8 million. the state spent 21.3 thousand medals on the purchase, and in 2022 the costs reached UAH 1.77 million. for the purchase of 20.6 thousand medals.
As you know, the former gold and silver medals were preferred when entering higher educational institutions, now they are important only when entering a professional (vocational) educational institution.
In recent years, the presence of medals was not taken into account when entering the Western Military District. The admission procedure for higher education in 2023 also did not establish advantages for applicants who received a gold or silver medal. In addition, in 2023, the average score of the education certificate is not taken into account for admission. And if the two applicants have an equal number of points, what matters is the priority of applications for admission,” according to the Educational Ombudsman’s website.
We remind you that according to the results of the national multi-subject test, three thousand applicants received 200 points in at least one subject, and seven of them received 200 points in all four subjects.
This year, 69 thousand applicants entered the budgetary form of education to get a bachelor’s degree in Ukraine.
