Ukraine is considering severing diplomatic relations with Iran over the supply of ballistic missiles to Russia.
This was announced by Foreign Ministry spokesman Georgy Tikhiy at a briefing on September 10.
The ministry spokesman stressed that Kyiv is closely monitoring developments.
Ukraine adheres to its previously announced position on the transfer of missiles – this will have “devastating consequences for Ukrainian-Iranian relations.” I will not specify now what exactly is meant by devastating consequences, so as not to weaken diplomatic positions, but all options, including the one you named, are on the table. If this transfer actually took place and the fact of such use is recorded, then the following consequences will follow, accordingly, – said Tykhyi.
According to him, it is not only about the security of Ukraine and relations with Iran, since “the context of these actions of Iran is much broader,” and the deepened interaction between Tehran and Moscow creates direct threats to the security of Europe and the Middle East.
The day before, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Iran’s Chargé d’Affaires in Ukraine, Shahriyar Amuzegar, over reports that Tehran was supplying Russia with ballistic missiles.
The Wall Street Journal, citing European and American officials, reported that Iran had already sent short-range ballistic missiles to Russia. This came as Russia stepped up its missile attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. The United States later officially confirmed the transfer.
