Tens of thousands of people protested against the appointment of Michel Barnier on Saturday, but more than half of French residents approved his candidacy.
Most of the French were pleased with the appointment of Michel Barnier as prime minister after almost two months of waiting. This is confirmed by the results of an Ifop survey published on Monday, September 9, conducted for the Journal du Dimanche.
Thus, 52% of the French said they were satisfied with the appointment of the former European Commissioner to the post of head of government. This is approximately the same result that his predecessor Gabriel Attal received when he took office (53%).
The new 73-year-old prime minister, who belongs to the center right, seems to the French above all competent (62%), as well as open to dialogue (61%) and likable (60%) .
At the same time, in the French National Assembly, which after early elections does not have an absolute majority and is very divided, 74% of respondents believe that the head of government can be quickly removed due to a vote of no confidence.
The Ifop survey was conducted online from 5 to 6 September 2024 among 950 people, representing the French population aged 18 and over.
Let’s remember that on September 5, Macron appointed Michel Barnier as Prime Minister and instructed him to form a new government.
And on September 7, thousands of people in various French cities came out to protest.
