Edmund Gonzalez fled his homeland after prosecutors issued a warrant for his arrest.
Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez, who is declaring victory in the country’s presidential election, has gone to Spain after being threatened with house arrest. This was announced by Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albarez on the social network X on Sunday, September 8.
“Edmundo Gonzalez, at his request, is flying to Spain on a Spanish Air Force plane. The Spanish government is committed to the political rights and physical integrity of all Venezuelans,” he wrote.
Earlier, Venezuela issued an arrest warrant for opposition leader Gonzalez on charges of terrorism, conspiracy and other crimes related to the presidential election. After that, Gonzalez ignored three calls to the prosecutor’s office.
As you know, the presidential election was held in Venezuela on July 28. The country’s electoral council officially declared Nicolás Maduro, who has been in power since 2013, as the winner. In turn, the opposition announced a confident victory for Edmundo Gonzalez.
After the announcement of the results of the presidential election, spontaneous rallies began in the country. Their participants believe that the authorities rigged the voting results in favor of Maduro.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the United States considers Gonzalez the winner of the Venezuelan elections. And the European Union has not recognized the democratic legitimacy of Maduro as president of Venezuela.
