IMF mission goes to Russia – Kyiv considers it absurd, legitimizing Putin’s regime

Ukraine has called on the IMF not to resume any cooperation with Russia after it was reported that the organisation would send a mission to Russia.

    .

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry stated that it would be “absurd” for the UN’s main financial institution to legitimize the Russian regime, which effectively destroyed the very foundations of the organization’s charter when it launched the largest war of conquest in Europe since World War II and began committing atrocities against Ukrainians.

Earlier, IMF Managing Director for Russia Alexey Mozhin told the British agency Reuters that the organization would send its official mission to Moscow. The last IMF mission to Russia was in 2019, during the COVID pandemic, and there were no further missions in 2022-2023 due to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

It would be absurd for the UN’s main financial institution to legitimize the Russian regime, which has effectively destroyed the very foundations of the UN Charter by launching the largest war of conquest in Europe since World War II and committing horrific atrocities against the Ukrainian people.

We call on the IMF not to resume any cooperation with Russia and to remain committed to the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter. We appeal to all key stakeholders, member countries and the IMF management to further isolate the aggressor state and not to resume dialogue while Russia kills civilians, children, destroys not only Ukraine, but also international rules and principles in general, – the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine says.
