Latvian authorities have decided to ban cars with Belarusian license plates from entering the country
On September 5, the Latvian Saeima adopted in the first reading a bill banning the use of cars with Belarusian registration plates in the country from November 1. The initiative has been given an urgent status, so it will be considered in two readings instead of three, Delfi reports.
If the law is passed, vehicles registered in Belarus must be re-registered or exported from Latvia by October 31, otherwise the car may be confiscated.
Starting from November, cars with Belarusian license plates will be able to enter the country once for transit purposes, provided that the driver has submitted a corresponding online application in advance.
The ban does not apply only to drivers with reduced mobility who come to visit relatives in Latvia, as well as “special cases related to safety”.
In mid-July, Latvian authorities banned cars registered in Belarus from entering the country. An exception was made only for cars used by embassy and consulate employees, as well as members of delegations.
