On August 30, Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes ordered the “immediate and complete” closure of the social network X (formerly Twitter) in the country.
This was reported by Reuters.
The decision is related to the fact that the social network’s management did not comply with court decisions, including not appointing its official representative in Brazil. The court’s ruling will remain in effect until the social network complies with all of these requirements, including paying fines totaling more than three million dollars.
In addition, a person or company that tries to bypass the blocking of the social network, for example, using a VPN, will be fined 50 thousand reals (almost 9 thousand dollars) for each day of violation.
X owner Elon Musk wrote that Brazilian authorities are “closing down the main source of truth” in the country. The businessman’s account pinned a post in which he called Judge Moraes “an evil dictator in judicial robes.”
Earlier this year, Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered social media platform X to block accounts suspected of spreading “fakes” and “hate.” The New York Times noted that the complaints mostly concerned accounts of supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.
Musk called Moraes’s claims censorship and closed X’s offices in Brazil, but the country’s residents were able to access the platform. After that, Brazil’s Supreme Court froze the local bank accounts of the satellite communications company Starlink, of which Musk owns 40%.
