At the 2024 Paralympic Games held in Paris, Ukraine received its first gold medal.
Ukrainian swimmer Alexander Komarov won the final 100-meter freestyle swim in class S5 (swimmers with moderately impaired coordination, severely impaired movements in the middle part of the body and legs, or missing limbs), reports “Obshchestvennoe. Sport”.
At the same time, Komarov set a new Paralympic record for class S5, covering this distance in 1:07.77 minutes!
The previous best result from London 2012 was held by Brazilian Daniel Dias – 1:09.35 minutes.
For Komarov, this is the second award of the Paralympics in Paris (the day before, he won bronze in 200m freestyle swimming) and the second gold in his Paralympic career – in 2016 in Rio, he triumphed in the 400m relay as part of the Ukrainian team.
Now the medal collection of the Ukrainian team includes six awards: one gold, three silver and two bronze. Five of them were won in swimming competitions.
