Some of those detained at the border are former prisoners who served their sentences in Russian colonies, Kholod wrote.
A group of 17 Ukrainians was stopped due to problems with documents at the Daryali checkpoint in Georgia on the Russian border. The Georgian side says it is awaiting confirmation of their identities from Kyiv. One of the Ukrainians, Alexander Shulgin, told the Kholod publication about this.
He noted that some of those detained at the border were former prisoners who had served their sentences in Russian colonies. The rest were deported by the Russian authorities for violating the migration regime.
Alexander Shulgin said that they all live in the basement, where there are several rooms with concrete walls without windows and the ability to go out.
Shulgin himself has lived in Russia for the past 10 years. In January 2024, he was detained and charged with violating the stay order. According to him, the police never asked permission to work.
Shulgin has been at the checkpoint since August 2. Some, according to him, have been there for almost two months, and none have been released since August. Among them, he said, there are also tuberculosis patients, who all live in the same room.
