The European Council has decided that Nicolás Maduro has no democratic legitimacy as president.
EU members have lost hope that Nicolas Maduro will provide evidence of his victory in the elections in Venezuela and do not recognize his legitimacy as the elected president. This was said on Thursday, August 29, by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, The Guardian reports.
“The European Council has decided that Maduro has no democratic legitimacy as president,” Borrell said.
He noted that Maduro has refused to release detailed voting results in elections that indicate his victory.
“Since there are no numbers and no audits, and we fear there won’t be, we cannot accept the legitimacy of Maduro as the elected president of Venezuela, he will remain the de facto president, but we reject democratic legitimacy based on results that cannot be verified,” Borrell said.
He added that the EU did not recognize Gonzalez as the elected president or the official winner of the election.
“However, voting data published by the Venezuelan opposition showed that the opposition candidate received strong support… more support than Maduro received,” the EU high representative stressed.
Venezuela’s Supreme Court ratified Nicolas Maduro’s victory in July’s presidential election. The opposition believes that this has strengthened institutional support for the ruling party.
