The specialists of the UNBROKEN Prosthetics and Orthotics Center are producing an orthopedic product for a dog for the first time.
The center said that the four-legged patient’s name was Sarah. She was probably hit by a car. With an injured front right paw, Sarah was brought to the Lviv municipal veterinary sterilization center for animals – LKP “Lev”. Local veterinarians were faced with a dilemma: to amputate the injured limb or save it.
I decided that I should fight for the injured paw. And I thought that it would be possible to install an orthosis for the dog, because she walks on three paws only. I wrote to UNBROKEN, where there is a Center for Prosthetics and Orthosis. We went there with Sarah, showed her to the specialists, all the X-rays and they decided to try to help this dog, – says the director of LKP “Lev” Yuliana Savruk.
An orthosis is a special orthopedic device that is used to stabilize, immobilize and support the body or affected limbs, as well as for their normal functioning.
Prosthetists have already taken measurements from Sarah. Doctors, despite their desire to help four-legged creatures move fully, admit that it is much easier for them to work with people.
For now, this is the first time we will be doing such orthotics for an animal. After taking measurements, the next step will be making this orthosis. And then the orthotics itself. We will see how the dog perceives our product and whether it chews the “new paw”, – says Vladislav Sikhovsky, head of the UNBROKEN Prosthetics and Orthotics Center.
