Because of its close ties to Africa, the EU is bracing for an increase in monkeypox cases.
EU countries are likely to see cases of a more severe form of monkeypox now spreading in Africa. This was reported by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).
“As a result of the rapid spread of this outbreak in Africa, the ECDC has raised the level of risk for the EU population and travelers to the affected areas. Given the close links between Europe and Africa, we must be prepared for increasing the number of cases among travelers,” said ECDC director Pamela Randi-Wagner.
The Center recommends that EU member states issue travel advice for people visiting or returning from areas affected by the outbreak. People from the European Union who travel to affected areas and have close contact with affected communities are likely to become infected. In addition, there is a moderate risk of infection among close contacts of possible or confirmed imported cases of the virus in the EU.
“Thanks to strengthened surveillance and preparedness measures, as well as strong public health and response capacities in EU member states, ECDC forecasts that the impact of the MPXV clade I pandemic in Europe will be negligible,” the statement said.
It will be remembered that on August 14, the WHO announced that the rapid spread of monkeypox in African countries is a global health emergency.
The first case of monkeypox outside of Africa was recorded in Sweden. The patient was infected during a trip to Africa.
China is tightening entry controls for six months in response to rising cases of monkeypox worldwide.
