Ukraine won the gold medal in the women’s team fencing tournament at the 2024 Olympics. This is Ukraine’s first gold at this Olympics.
On the evening of August 3, a medal ceremony was held in Paris, where our national anthem was played. It was very emotional.
In the final, the Ukrainian fencers, consisting of Olga Kharlan, Alina Komashchuk, Elena Krvatska and Yulia Bakastova, defeated the South Korean team.
Before the last clash, our fencing team was losing to the Koreans 37:40.
The competition lasts until 45. That is, Olga Harlan had to make 8 injections and miss no more than 4 to win.
The result of the last fight was 8:2 in Olga’s favor.
Harlan won the sixth Olympic medal in her career, which is an absolute record among Ukrainians.
As part of the team, the legendary fencer also won gold in Beijing 2008 and bronze in Rio 2016, and in individual tournaments, she has bronze medals from London 2012, Rio 2016 and Paris 2024. Ukraine won its first Olympic gold in fencing since 2012.
This is also the second gold medal in history for the Ukrainian women’s team in the sabre tournament. At the 2008 games, the Ukrainian team defeated China in the final.
We cannot comprehend it. I think we will comprehend it a little later. We know one thing: we raised the Ukrainian flag higher, sang the anthem. This medal is for our defenders. We thank our families for their support. We are in shock, – this is how Olga commented on her victory.
Harlan also won her first Olympic gold in 16 years, the longest time between a first and last gold medal in women’s fencing.
With her new victory, she surpassed her previous achievement, which she shared with swimmer Yana Klochkova.
- 6 – Olga Kharlan (fencing, 2 gold + 1 silver + 3 bronze)
