North Korea hopes it can use the close personal relationship between the North Korean leader and Trump to its advantage, despite Pyongyang’s official statement that the state “doesn’t care” who becomes president of the United States.
North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un wants to see Donald Trump as US president and believes his arrival at the White House is a “once in a thousand year opportunity” for North Korea. This was said on Friday, August 2, by former North Korean diplomat Lee Il-gyu, who once worked in Cuba and fled with his family to South Korea, reports the BBC.
According to him, Kim Jong-un views Trump as someone with whom he can negotiate a nuclear weapons program.
He recalled that Trump had previously hailed his relationship with Kim as a key achievement of his presidency and said they literally “fell in love with each other” through an exchange of letters.
“Just last month, Trump told a rally that Kim wanted to see him back in the White House: “I think he misses me, if you want to know the truth,” the BBC recalled Trump saying .
North Korea hopes it can use the close personal relationship to its advantage, Lee said.
He also stressed that North Korea, as a nuclear state, would never give up its weapons and would likely seek to conclude a deal to freeze its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of US sanctions.
The former diplomat also spoke about strengthening ties between North Korea and Russia and noted that the war in Ukraine was a lucky ticket for Pyongyang.
“The country has been given the opportunity to continue developing nuclear weapons in exchange for military support, without having to approach the US for sanctions relief,” Lee said.
At the same time, he emphasized that Kim Jong-un understands that these relations between the DPRK and the Kremlin are temporary, and after the war Russia is likely to break them.
“North Korea understands that the only way it can survive, the only way to eliminate the threat of aggression and develop its economy is to normalize relations with the United States,” the country’s ex-diplomat said.
Let’s recall that the United States previously warned that the use of nuclear weapons by the DPRK would lead to the “end of the regime” of Kim Jong-un.
