This was reported by the Reuters agency.
Silver was awarded to Kim Minjong from South Korea, bronze to Temur Rakhimov from Tajikistan and Alisher Yusupov from Uzbekistan.
Prior to this, Riner received:
- gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games;
- gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games;
- gold medal at the 2020 Olympic Games.
He thus broke the record of Japanese judoka Tadahiro Nomura, who, competing in the lightest weight category of less than 60 kg, became the first judoka to win three individual Olympic champion titles (at the 1996, 2000 and 2000 Olympics).
Riner had previously stated that he planned to end his career at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (which would be symbolic, since Japan is the founding country of judo), but would postpone this decision for four years if Paris (whose candidacy he ardently supported through his participation in the corresponding project) is chosen to host the 2024 Summer Olympics.
