Tehran and its ally Moscow are pursuing opposing goals in influencing the results of the US election.
Iran is using its own resources, particularly covert social media activity, to undermine Donald Trump’s US election candidacy. This was said by an employee of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), reports CNN.
The US intelligence community has recorded that Tehran is trying to influence the presidential election because Iranian leaders likely want to avoid an outcome they believe will exacerbate tensions with the US.
It has been noted that recent Iranian influence activities have taken the form of hidden social media accounts and related activities.
Iran’s preference for the US presidential candidate has not changed since 2020, according to an ODNI official. Iran has conducted a multifaceted covert influence campaign in the 2020 election aimed at damaging Trump’s re-election prospects, according to a declassified US intelligence report.
At the same time, there has been no change in Russia’s allegations since 2020, when Moscow conducted a series of influence operations to support Trump and aimed to destroy Joe Biden.
In a comment to CNN, Iran’s Permanent Mission to the UN said the country has no goals or activities aimed at influencing the US election.
Recall that US intelligence agencies received information about Iran’s preparations to assassinate Trump, after which the Secret Service tightened security around him. The reason may be revenge for the assassination of senior Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, who died in January 2020 during the Trump administration. Iran denies plotting to kill Trump.
