In the Kharkov region alone, Russian strikes destroyed more than 700 energy facilities and 8,000 kilometers of power lines.
Ukraine and the United States are working on a roadmap for our country’s postwar energy system. This includes safe nuclear energy technologies and renewable energy sources. US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm announced this on Wednesday, July 24, in an interview with Reuters.
“Ukrainians are under constant threat. So we need to help them get through this time, strengthen their existing assets,” Granholm said.
He added that together with Ukrainian authorities, the United States is developing a plan for what the Ukrainian energy system will look like after the war.
“It could be micro-reactors. It could be small modular reactors (SMRs). It would certainly be distributed solar and wind generation combined with batteries,” he said.
Granholm said that new nuclear capacity could be part of the energy system of the future if it is designed in a safe way.
Germany will contribute 50 million euros to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund. Thus, the country’s total contribution to the fund is more than 275 million euros.
