In nearly 20 years, the United States has dismantled 12,088 nuclear warheads, including 405 as of September 2020.
As of September 2023, the US nuclear warhead arsenal consists of 3,748 units. This was announced by the US National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) on Saturday, July 20.
It is indicated that it is significantly lower than in 1967, when the US nuclear arsenal consisted of a record 31,255 warheads.
From fiscal years 1994 to 2023 (ending September 30), the United States dismantled 12,088 nuclear warheads, including 405 since September 2020. About 2,000 more nuclear warheads have been decommissioned and are awaiting dismantling.
“Since September 30, 1991, the number of US non-strategic nuclear weapons (short and medium range carriers – ed.) has decreased by more than 90%,” the report said.
The United States has not published up-to-date information on its nuclear arsenal for the past two years, citing the fact that this data could endanger the country’s national security.
Recall that in 2023, the world’s nine nuclear-weapon states spent a total of $91.4 billion on their arsenals. The said data was released by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). The US share of total spending was $51.5 billion, more than all other nuclear-armed nations combined.
It was also reported that the White House intends to adopt a more aggressive approach to nuclear weapons after China and Russia rejected US attempts to discuss arms control issues together.
