Phu Chong’s death comes at a time of political turmoil for the country’s communist leadership.
General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong has died at the age of 80. According to an official statement released on Friday, July 19, Fu Chong died “of old age and serious illness.” The BBC reported it.
“Vietnam’s longtime leader Nguyen Phu Trong has died after a period of illness, marking the end of a political era,” the statement said.
As general secretary of Vietnam’s ruling Communist Party since 2011, Phu Trong is considered one of the country’s most powerful leaders in decades. He was also the president of the country at the time and is also famous for his “melting furnace” campaign against corruption.
Phu Trong’s death occurred during a period of political turmoil for Vietnam’s communist leadership. Three of the party’s top leaders have resigned in recent months following unspecified allegations of wrongdoing.
After his death, the country’s president, To Lam, will take responsibility for running the central committee, politburo and party secretary.
Let’s remember that after the visit of the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, the US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Daniel Kritenbrink, arrived in Hanoi. The Vietnamese Foreign Minister confirmed that his country continues to consider the United States as an “important strategic partner.”
