Virtual voting for the presidential candidates is scheduled to take place in the first week of August.
The US Democratic National Committee has decided to postpone for a week the nomination of President Joseph Biden as a candidate for the position of head of state. The New York Times reported this on Wednesday, July 17.
According to the publication, the Democratic leaders in the Senate – Chuck Schumer – and in the House of Representatives – Hakeem Jeffries, pushed the party to postpone the start of the nomination process.
California Congressman Jared Huffman, who organized his fellow Democrats to force the party to delay the nomination process, called the new terms a “positive step” but said they were unlikely to relieve the concerns about Biden’s political viability.
Party leaders announced Wednesday that virtual voting for presidential candidates will take place in the first week of August, a concession to Democrats who protested plans to begin voting the following week.
Moving the voting date is fraught with problems for some states, such as Ohio, Washington, Montana, Oklahoma and California. They will have a deadline to submit ballots within a week of the party convention.
How the voting process for the US Democratic Party candidate will be organized and when it will begin will be determined on July 19.
Right now, the Democratic Party has no mechanism that allows Biden to be removed as a candidate unless he decides to withdraw. A majority of the party’s 4,600 convention delegates are required to vote for the incumbent president in the first round, regardless of what happens on that vote.
Let’s remember that in June, Joe Biden and former US President Donald Trump took part in the debate. Biden’s performance was so bad that the Democratic Party called for a change in presidential candidate. However, Biden was reluctant and refused to voluntarily withdraw his candidacy.
