Police officers who participated in the Kosovo mission were sent to train border soldiers.
From August 1, Poland will start Operation Safe Podlasie on the border with Belarus, which will involve about 17 thousand military personnel. This was announced by Polish Minister of Defense Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Komysh, RMF24 reports.
According to him, the decision to introduce a buffer zone on the border of Belarus had a positive effect – the number of attempts to cross the border and the crossings themselves were halved.
The 18th Mechanized Division will be responsible for the operation. Police officers, including those who participated in the Kosovo mission, were sent to train border soldiers.
Poland is also asking for Belarus’ cooperation in the investigation to find the killer of a Polish soldier who died after being wounded at the border.
Let us remind you that in June Poland introduced a buffer zone on the border with Belarus. Before this, a soldier died in Poland, wounded by a knife of an illegal migrant trying to enter the country from the territory of Belarus.
The Polish government is considering the possibility of closing all border crossings on the Belarusian border. It examines what impact such a decision might have on the economy and local communities.
