According to the document, the recent visit of the Hungarian Prime Minister to the terrorist federation is a “flagrant violation of EU treaties and the common foreign policy.” The MEPs reiterated their position that the EU should continue to support Kyiv for as long as it needs to win.
The text, published on the European Parliament’s website, says Hungary must be held accountable for Orban’s actions.
MEPs are demanding that Hungary be stripped of its voting rights in the EU following Orban’s trips to Russia and China. They have addressed a response letter to the EU leadership, Politico reports.
The document was adopted with 495 votes “for”. 137 MEPs voted “against”, 47 “abstained”. There are 720 MEPs in the EU.
The statement said the Hungarian prime minister had “already caused significant damage… he made several diplomatic visits, in particular to Putin in Russia and Xi Jinping in China, during which he deliberately misrepresented his credentials.”
The day before, Orban, in a letter to the President of the European Council, proposed resuming diplomatic relations with Russia and called for negotiations with China.
Charles Michel later responded to Viktor Orban’s letter about his “peace mission.” He stated that no discussions on Ukraine can take place without Ukraine.
In addition, the head of the European Council recalled that the Hungarian Prime Minister has no mandate to act on behalf of the EU, and “the most direct path to peace is for Russia to withdraw all forces from Ukraine and respect territorial integrity.” This letter will be sent to all EU members and Ukraine.
