In this way, Russia hoped to block the movement of trains with heavy weapons and ammunition of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the direction of the front. This was reported today, July 12, by the press services of the Rivne and Kharkiv regional prosecutor’s offices, as well as the SBU press center.
To commit the crimes, the defendants used flammable mixtures that they had prepared in advance according to instructions from the Russian special services, the SBU noted.
In Kharkov, an enemy saboteur was detained red-handed – he tried to destroy the relay cabinet of a railway traffic light at one of the key races in the region.
According to the investigation, the suspect:
- damaged relay cabinets of signaling, centralization and blocking systems in Kharkov, which ensure the operation of automation and serve the safety of railway traffic;
- he committed the crimes using a fire-starting solution that he had previously bought at a gas station. He broke down the metal doors of relay cabinets with a crowbar, doused the railroad’s electrical equipment with the said liquid and set it on fire;
- took photos and videos of the consequences and sent them to a representative of the Russian special services via messenger.
The perpetrator turned out to be a repeat offender from Odessa, who had previously served a sentence for robbery and attempted premeditated murder. He had recently arrived in Kharkov and was staying with his fiancée. Before that, he had lived in Odessa, and even earlier in Lviv.
The Russian special service involved him in sabotage because of an ad on a job search website, which the suspect responded to deliberately. It has been preliminarily established that the man received about 9 thousand hryvnia for one arson, the regional prosecutor’s office notes.
Two more detainees turned out to be unemployed residents of Rivne. According to the investigation, they found “work” through Telegram – the employer turned out to be a curator of the Russian special service. They came to the attention of the FSB as active users of Russian Telegram channels looking for quick money.
In fulfillment of the curator’s assignment, the attackers set fire to a railway relay cabinet responsible for the safety of train traffic at the Rivne station – it controls the operation of semaphores on one of the main railway lines of the western region.
The attackers worked in tandem:
- one of them set fire to the relay cabinet;
- another one filmed the sabotage on his own phone camera in order to then send it to the FSB for a “report”.
Further communication between the saboteurs and their FSB handlers took place via anonymous chats in messengers, the SBU notes. — In the event of hostile tasks being carried out, the occupiers promised to transfer monetary rewards to the bank cards of their henchmen.
In addition, law enforcement officers established that the suspects were also involved in the arson of cars in the regional center, which were also committed on orders from Russian special services.
During the searches, mobile phones were seized from the detainees.
The detainees were informed of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 113 of the Criminal Code (sabotage committed under martial law). They are in custody. They face life imprisonment.
