The bot farm used a tool called Meliorator, which used AI to create real X accounts, generate text and images, and spread disinformation on Russia.
The US Department of Justice, along with international partners, exposed a network of nearly a thousand accounts on X (formerly known as Twitter) that used artificial intelligence to spread Russian disinformation. Engadget wrote this on Wednesday, July 10.
It was established that the bot farm operated on the basis of software developed by RT’s digital media department, which is controlled by the Russian publication.
Presumably, the development was led by the deputy editor-in-chief of RT in 2022, and the funding and approval was given by an official of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation.
The bot farm used a tool called Meliorator, which used AI to create real X accounts, generate text and images, and spread misinformation.
The US Department of Justice continues to track down all accounts used for this activity and has blocked most of them.
Some of these accounts published videos of Putin’s speeches, in which he justified Russia’s actions in Ukraine and insisted on “issues of principle.” Other bots have given activity to the posts.
FBI Director Christopher Wray noted that the Russian Federation intended to use this bot farm to fuel a disinformation campaign to undermine support for Ukraine.
Earlier, the Meta company reported that it had exposed a network of fake accounts from China that pretended to be “Americans” and criticized aid to Ukraine.
Russia is also currently conducting an information operation “Peace”, the purpose of which is to dilute the Ukrainian Peace Formula in the countries of the West and the Global South.
