The Hungarian Prime Minister asserted that China is a major force in creating the conditions for peace in the Russian-Ukrainian war.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said the purpose of his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing was to “discuss ways to end the Russian-Ukrainian war.” He revealed this on his social network account X.
“China is an important force in creating the conditions for peace in the Russian-Ukrainian war. That is why I met with President Xi in Beijing, just two months after his official visit to Budapest,” the Hungarian official wrote .
The Hungarian Prime Minister signed his post with the hashtags Hungarian EU Presidency #HU24EU and peace mission #peacemission, as if he was acting on behalf of the European Union.
However, the EU leadership has repeatedly emphasized that Orban is not authorized to act on behalf of the European Union, and that his trips to Kyiv, Moscow and Beijing, allegedly on a “peace mission,” are bilateral contact between Hungary and their respective countries. In particular, the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, previously commented on Orban’s trip to Moscow with the statement that the Hungarian prime minister does not have an EU mandate to travel to Russia on behalf of the European Union.
Xi Jinping said the priority now should be “rapid de-escalation,” echoing his country’s comments after a full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, according to a spokesman for Beijing’s Foreign Ministry.
According to Hungarian state news agency MTI, Orban praised China, citing its “toughness and stability.”
Bloomberg said Xi Jinping’s comments are unlikely to help end the conflict. Beijing initially tried to present itself as more neutral after the Russian attack, but has since developed a deep friendship with Moscow in what Xi and Vladimir Putin call a “borderless friendship.”
Let’s recall that on July 2, the Prime Minister of Hungary visited Ukraine for the first time since the beginning of a full-scale war, where he met with President Vladimir Zelensky and invited Ukraine to cease fire, and then start negotiations peace with Russia. .
Orban later visited Moscow, and after meeting with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, he announced several more “surprise” visits.
