Ukraine has become the most mined territory in the world, surpassing Afghanistan and Syria in this indicator.
Japan will work with Cambodia to remove mines from Ukraine and other war-torn countries. This was stated by Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa on Saturday, July 6, during a visit to the Cambodian Mine Action Center, the Associated Press wrote.
He emphasized that Cambodia is a world leader in mining.
“Cambodia is an important partner for Japan in its global demining efforts. I am also confident that Cambodia will make a significant contribution to raising awareness of the inhumanity of landmines as a mine-affected country,” he said. .
Yoko Kamikawa said that within the framework of the Japan-Cambodian Mine Action Initiative, Japan will provide full assistance in humanitarian demining in Ukraine.
“Next week we will give Ukraine a large demining machine, and next month here in Cambodia we will train Ukrainian personnel on how to operate this machine,” the minister explained.
Cambodian deminers are among the most experienced in the world, and over the past decade, several thousand of them have been deployed under UN auspices to work in Africa and the Middle East.
At one time, millions of landmines were placed in Cambodia, where civil war lasted for nearly 30 years. After the end of the war in 1998, the country, along with Japan, began to conduct mine clearance work on its territory. Since the end of the conflict in Cambodia, nearly 20,000 people have been killed and approximately 45,000 injured by explosives left over from the war.
In 2022, Cambodia began training deminers from Ukraine, which also suffers from a high density of mines and other unexploded ordnance on its territory.
Cambodia is one of nearly 100 UN member states that co-sponsored a resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
