Ukrainian Defense Forces withdrew from the Kanal microdistrict of the city of Chasov Yar, located west of the occupied Bakhmut.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces retreated to Chasovoy Yar. According to the representative of OSUV Khortitsa, Nazar Voloshin, the Ukrainian military has left the Kanal microdistrict, which is not worth holding due to the risk of heavy losses. “The positions of our defenders were destroyed, and the command decided to retreat to more protected and prepared positions,” said Voloshin. What risks does this create in this sector of the front?
Battle of Chasov Yar
According to DeepState analysts, the invaders completely destroyed the Kanal (New) microdistrict, so the withdrawal of the Defense Forces from there is logical. According to Voloshin, the invaders are trying to completely take over the city in order to meet certain deadlines. In the Chasovoy Yar area, 230 attacks from all types of weapons were recorded during the day.
The situation in the Chasovoy Yar area is critically difficult, the press officer of the 24th King Daniel Brigade Ivan Petrichak reported on July 3.
According to Petrichak, fighting with the invaders is taking place on the border of the Seversky Donets – Donbass canal. The Russians attack with forces of ex-prisoners from Storm-V units, paratroopers and special forces.
“We do not see a decrease in the number of attacks, the enemy is using both artillery and multiple launch rocket systems… The situation remains tense, however, the 24th King Daniel Brigade is holding the lines ,” he says.
As Petrichak added, the occupying army covered the attack operations by artillery shelling, drops from kamikaze drones and Lancets. He noted that the tactics of the Russians have not changed – they conduct “meat attacks.”
“We have several Russian armed formations stationed here. These are special forces, airborne forces, the first echelon against us are former prisoners… They are trying to advance in small groups,” the brigade added.
Are major battles ahead?
“Battles gradually moved towards the Seversky Donets – Donbass Canal, because from the Canal it is easier to defend than to attack. And therefore, the main battles are still ahead,” said the military expert Mikhail Zhirokhov.
He also said when the situation could be considered critical: “As the battle continues up to the Seversky Donets-Donbass canal, they are very difficult, very unpleasant, but have only one tactical importance. If the Russians manage to cross the canal and occupy at least one type of bridge, then it is close to disaster.
Important point
If Russian troops manage to capture Chasov Yar, they will launch an attack on Konstantinovka, Druzhkovka, Kramatorsk and Slavyansk, Voloshin predicted.
“This is a dominant height in the region, control of which will allow the Russian occupiers, if they reach it, to significantly simplify their advance in the direction of Konstantinovka, Slavyansk and Kramatorsk,” said OSUV speaker Khortytsia.
He also added that these cities are the last stronghold of the Donetsk region, which is now under Ukrainian control.
Weapons are not enough
The President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky does not consider the situation at the front as a stalemate, but at the same time states that Ukraine’s counter-offensive and success on the battlefield depends on the supply of Western weapons.
“This is not a stalemate, this is a problematic situation. The stalemate is despair, but the problem can be solved,” Zelensky said in an interview with Bloomberg, published on Thursday, July 4.
He said that now the Ukrainian Defense Forces have 14 brigades that are not equipped with weapons, because the weapons promised by the West did not arrive on time.
“We do not have weapons, which have already been voted (in the US Congress), they say the packages will come slowly. We are grateful to the Congress for its support, but all this must come,” said Zelensky.
A lot of time passes from the decision on the weapons to the actual receipt; this is the “greatest tragedy of the war,” he stressed.
