Ukraine and the United States signed a bilateral agreement on security guarantees on June 13. In it, Kyiv pledged to carry out a number of institutional reforms on the country’s path to membership in the North Atlantic Alliance.
The bilateral security agreement signed by the United States and Ukraine is not a “replacement” for its NATO membership. The document is part of the bridge on this path. This was stated by the Deputy Representative of the US State Department Vedant Patel on Monday, July 1, writes Ukrinform.
According to him, the United States views the agreement with Ukraine “as part of a bridge so that one day Ukraine can join NATO.”
“You saw the secretary of state and the current president talking about how important it is that there is a bridge to Ukraine’s membership in NATO. Of course, this bilateral agreement on security guarantees is not a substitute for on Ukraine’s membership in NATO,” said Patel.
A State Department spokesman emphasized that the United States supports an open-door policy with the Alliance.
Earlier, Vladimir Zelensky said that the United States does not support inviting Ukraine to NATO. This is done so as not to irritate the head of the Russian regime, Vladimir Putin.
Earlier, Biden named the condition for Ukraine’s entry into the Alliance.
