The Kremlin’s unprecedented move has forced the UK military into action to protect British and Irish waters.
Since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russian attack submarines have twice carried out missions near the Irish Sea, which separates the island of Ireland from Great Britain. The first known case occurred about 18 months ago, and the second more recently. Bloomberg wrote this on Monday, July 1, citing its own sources.
Journalists’ interlocutors noted that the scale of movement of Russian submarines exceeded that previously recorded in Britain.
They added that US officials were aware of the submarines’ movements.
As the publication writes, we are talking about Russian Kilo-class submarines, which carry Caliber missiles and are also armed with naval torpedoes and mines.
“Russia’s deployment of submarines around Britain and Ireland may be an attempt to expose potential weaknesses in their maritime defenses or an attempt to intimidate the United Kingdom into responding to its support for Ukraine,” Bloomberg wrote.
It was previously reported that the Russian military is sinking its submarines in their underwater bases to shelter from potential attacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
