So far, almost 4.2 million people displaced from Ukraine enjoy temporary protection in the EU, a third of whom are children.
Day after day, Russia terrorizes the Ukrainian people with its bombings. These are unsafe events. Those who have fled Russian aggression can continue to count on our solidarity, said Belgian State Secretary for Asylum and Migration Nicole de Moor, representing the country holding the EU Council Presidency.
The temporary protection mechanism was launched on March 4, 2022.
The decision provides collective protection to a large group of displaced people arriving in the EU and unable to return to their country of origin. Temporary protection provides citizens of Ukraine with the right to residence, medical and social assistance, housing, access to the labor market and education for children.
