Due to Western sanctions, Russia began exporting oil by sea using old tankers that did not have proper insurance.

Now there are approximately 1,400 such ships around the world; they transport about 1.5 million barrels of oil per day.
These ships are not repaired and often have accidents, which can lead to oil spills. Many tankers leave the Baltic Sea off the coast of Germany and Denmark.
According to Helsinki, about 70 ships leave the Gulf of Finland towards the North Sea every week, each of them carrying about 100 thousand tons of Russian oil.
Hannes Damm, a member of the Landtag of the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern from the Union 90/Greens party, is concerned about this:
It would be a disaster if the Baltic Sea and beaches were polluted as a result of such a tanker accident.
The Danish authorities agree with this. They are considering the possibility of banning the passage of oil tankers that are not safe enough. Copenhagen has created a working group for this purpose with other countries of the Baltic region, Foreign Minister Lars Lekke Rasmussen said.
