Diplomats from the Bucharest Nine, an association of countries on the eastern flank of NATO, are considering the possibility of expelling Hungary from their membership for its position towards Ukraine. This association, whose goal is to develop military cooperation between Eastern European countries and exchange intelligence, includes Bulgaria, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Romania, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. People’s Deputy and head of the Ukrainian delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Yegor Chernev reported this on June 11 in Telegram.
According to the politician, the government of pro-Russian Viktor Orban will be disconnected from the European Union and NATO step by step. First, Hungary will be expelled from all sorts of minor formal and informal associations. If Budapest does not change its current position, then they will begin to “cut off” Hungary’s opportunities within the EU and the North Atlantic Alliance.
Chernev also writes that parallel to Orban, pressure is increasing within Hungary itself. In addition, the majority of Hungarians support Ukraine; they also gave the party of the current prime minister the smallest number of votes in the elections to the European Parliament over the past 20 years.
The problem with Orban needs to be resolved as soon as possible. The mother of the Kremlin’s Trojan horse is dangerous not only for Ukraine, but also for the whole of Europe, the parliamentarian emphasized.
Let us recall that on May 9, President Vladimir Zelensky had a telephone conversation with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and stated that the conversation was long and thorough, that they “coordinated further steps for a mutually beneficial solution to the entire range of bilateral issues.”
