The United Nations will be represented at the meeting at the appropriate level as an observer.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will not attend the peace summit, which will take place on June 15-16 in Switzerland. This was announced by his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric.
At the same time, Dujarric emphasized that the UN will be “represented at the appropriate level” as an observer.
More than 160 states have been invited to the peace summit. The leaders of several G7 countries are expected to attend: German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Prime Ministers of Canada and Japan Justin Trudeau and Fumio Kishida. The United States will be represented by Vice President Kamala Harris.
At the same time, important countries of the “global south” such as China, Brazil, Mexico and Saudi Arabia decided to ignore the conference. Beijing says it will only support summits where both sides of the conflict are represented.
In the past, the UN has said that they will participate in the Peace Summit, but it is not known which of the representatives of the structure will go to the meeting.
Russia and China are using mass opposition to holding the Peace Summit. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said this.
