Hungary has a different approach to the Russian war against Ukraine, because in Europe many see the danger and feel in a state of war, while in Hungary this is not the case, they said in Budapest.
Hungary says they see no point in going to the Peace Summit in Switzerland, because Russia is not represented there. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said this on Sunday, June 2, in an interview with the Belarusian publication ONT.
According to him, Budapest doubts whether this event will produce results, because the aggressor country was not invited here.
“If not both sides of the war are represented, I think it is a legitimate question whether the whole conference makes sense in terms of the ultimate goal, which is the desire for peace. Therefore, we believe that the a peace conference has real meaning and offers the best hope for peace.” if both sides are sitting at the table,” said Szijjártó.
In addition, the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry said that the war is between Ukraine and Russia, so it is not “home” for Budapest.
“Russia did not attack us. We are not at war. Ukraine is not fighting for us. If we were attacked, the situation would be different, but we were not attacked, like other states of the European Union. The NATO Secretary General spoke clearly ” that none of the Alliance allies are under military threat, so if we are not under military threat, why do we think this is our war?”
About 46% of Hungarian citizens believe that the European Union should not support Ukraine in any way. At the same time, 32% of Hungarians would support EU aid through financial, economic and humanitarian means.
