How to offset your carbon emissions?

The ideal is to fly less. If you continue, you should invest in big projects.

If you’re trying to reduce your footprint on the planet, the impact of air travel can be daunting. The average French person’s carbon footprint in a year is 11 tons of CO₂, according to the Reforest’Action website. Paris-Rio return flight is available for 4 people per day. Something to feel flygskamThis embarrassment of taking a plane was popularized by Greta Thunberg.

To be smart and participate in the overall effort to reduce carbon emissions, it is better to refrain from flying. If it’s too difficult… we can already offset our emissions, i.e. financially support projects that allow carbon storage (for example, forestry projects, trees are excellent CO₂ sensors) or avoid carbon dioxide emissions (projects which are aimed at carbon conservation, the carbon economy, in particular by building biogas reservoirs).

How does it work?

We start by estimating our emissions using online calculators (Reforest’Action, GoodPlanet, etc.). We enter the city of departure, the city of arrival, the number of travelers… We can even add the car trips to get to the airport and the different stages of the journey. In a few seconds we get an estimate of the CO₂ tonnes emitted into the atmosphere during our journey.

How much does it cost?

A carbon meter converts tons of CO₂ into prices to put them in to offset emissions into the atmosphere. Your CO₂ emissions will still remain in the atmosphere, but you’ll make a financial effort to help reduce their impact. Unfortunately, the prices are not regulated. calculators will give you a wide range of compensation costs… According to the 2015 Energy Transition Act, a tonne of CO₂ emitted into the atmosphere today costs €56. But in 2030 it will cost €100. You have to do your calculations.

I’m going for it!

In France, two benchmark players are Reforest’Action, whose main work is to raise awareness and take action for forests. In 2019, the company planted 5 million trees, 2 million of them in France. And he makes sure he only works with certified and labeled projects. Another key player is the GoodPlanet Foundation, led by Jan Artus-Bertrand, whose niche is development projects aimed at avoiding CO₂ emissions. Even if they are not directly involved in carbon offsets, other associations specializing in forest protection, such as members of the all4trees community, will also be able to invest your money in low carbon projects.
