Swiss singer Nemo, who won the 68th Eurovision Song Contest with his song The Code, became the competition’s first non-binary winner.
Turkey’s president has accused the annual Eurovision Song Contest of allegedly promoting “gender neutralization” and threatening the traditional family. The Guaradian writes about it on Monday, May 20.
In particular, Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the competition’s participants “Trojan horses of social corruption” and said his government was right to exclude Turkey from the pan-European pop competition since 2012.
“It is impossible to find a normal person in such events,” said Erdogan, whose ruling party has its roots in Turkey’s Islamic movement.
Speaking about traditional values, he also pointed to Turkey’s markedly declining birth rates and said it was an “existential threat” and a “catastrophe” for the country.
Last week, Turkey’s State Statistical Institute announced that the country’s birth rate will fall to 1.51 children per woman by 2023. The Turkish leader has long encouraged families to have at least three children.
