On May 2, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry announced a reaction to new US sanctions against Russia due to Russian crimes on the territory of Ukraine related to the use of chloropicrin and special ammunition filled with dangerous chemicals.
Official Kyiv stated that a large number of the ammunition used are hand gas grenades of various types, which are riot control weapons and are prohibited for use as weapons of war in accordance with paragraph 5 of Article I of the Chemical Weapons Convention.
Despite the reaction of the international community, the aggressor state continues to neglect and grossly violate the norms of international law. The competent authorities of Ukraine are taking measures to bring the perpetrators to justice, Ukrainian diplomats said in a statement.
On May 1, the US State Department imposed sanctions against Russia for the use of chemical weapons in Ukraine.
Under the Chemical Weapons Prohibition Act, the US State Department acknowledged that Russia used the chemical weapon chloropicrin against Ukrainian troops in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention.
In this regard, the US State Department imposed sanctions on the Radiation, Chemical and Biological Defense Troops of the Russian Ministry of Defense, the Russian Research Institute of Applied Acoustics and the 48th Central Research Institute of the Russian Ministry of Defense, engaged in the development of chemical weapons, and on four companies that have attitude towards the Russian chemical weapons program
The United States will continue to use its available tools to disrupt support for the Russian military industrial base and limit Russia’s use of the international financial system for subsequent war against Ukraine,” the State Department said in a statement.
