In Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reaffirmed the United States’ steadfast support for Ukraine in the face of ongoing Russian aggression. Speaking at a meeting of Arab and European foreign ministers, Blinken outlined a US plan to strengthen Ukraine militarily, economically and democratically, Voice of America writes.
As soon as Russia demonstrates a sincere desire to negotiate, we will be there. I believe that the Ukrainians will too,” the Secretary of State said in a conversation with Borge Brende, President of the World Economic Forum, at a meeting of foreign ministers of Arab and European countries in Riyadh on April 29.
He also outlined a united international front in support of Ukraine, emphasizing that Russia’s actions not only threaten the Ukrainian people, but also challenge the fundamental principles of the world order. The US-led effort allegedly led to aid packages, including $61 billion, passed in Washington the day before.
However, Blinken emphasized that ending the war depends on Putin, who allegedly announced the start of negotiations, but does not intend to make any concessions. He confirmed the US readiness to participate in negotiations if Russia demonstrates a genuine readiness for dialogue.
China must decide
The US Secretary of State admitted that China does not directly supply Russia with weapons, missiles, and ammunition, as Iran or North Korea do.
But China provides invaluable support to Russia’s defense industrial base, which has helped Russia cope with enormous pressure from sanctions, export controls and other measures, Blinken said.
It receives massive supplies of machine tools, microelectronics, and optics, mainly from China. Now these are dual-use goods, but we know very clearly where so many of them are going… This allows Russia to continue its aggression against Ukraine. It perpetuates a war that China says it would like to see end. So do we all,” Blinken said.
Russia needs to catch up
Over the past year, Russia has learned to produce new weapons faster than ever before in history.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Russia has significantly accelerated the pace of production of ammunition, missiles, tanks and armored vehicles. Moscow managed to do this thanks to significant assistance in the form of machine tools, microelectronics and optics, mostly from China.
Last week, the German Defense Minister said that the Russian military-industrial complex is already producing weapons and ammunition at a profit – part of what is produced no longer goes to the front, but ends up in warehouses. The amount of weapons exceeds Russia’s needs for the war against Ukraine. That is, the Kremlin is preparing for a larger war in Europe.
