The 98-year-old grandmother walked across the front line all day without food or water, fell several times, got up and left again.
How I was shaken and thrown into the grass. I fell asleep. And then she left again. She fell again and then stood up. I thought I’d go slowly,” the woman recalls her long journey in an interview, a video of which was published by the police.
Two batons helped her walk.
By evening, the military saw a tired woman on the road and handed her over to the White Angel police group, which is evacuating civilians from the front-line territories. The police do not say where exactly this happened, but the woman managed to reach Ukrainian-controlled territory.
The police took the grandmother to a shelter, where she was fed. There she can rest and stay for a while.
Police found the woman’s relatives. It is unclear what happened and how they got lost. According to her, there were shellings, and the daughter-in-law and son decided to hide. But it seems that she and Lydia Stepanovna went down different roads.
Lydia Stepanovna’s house, which she built herself, was destroyed by Russian shelling.
Everything is upside down there. It’s scary what’s happening there… I woke up and they were shooting. It’s scary,” the grandmother says about her house in Ocheretino.
After such a trip, Lydia Stepanovna, it seems, could not come to her senses for a very long time. She talks with horror about everything she experienced.
I survived this war and am surviving this war. Stayed light. Houses are burning, trees have been uprooted,” she says.
The granddaughter promised to come for the woman.
