North Korea has the technical ability to produce bacteria, viruses and toxins that can be used as biological agents for military purposes.

North Korea is developing microbial sprays and devices that can spread deadly diseases like smallpox and anthrax. The Sun reported this on Wednesday, April 17, citing US intelligence.

In particular, the US State Department report states that the DPRK has a targeted offensive biological weapons program at the national level.

“Pyongyang is likely capable of using toxic substances in sprayers and injection devices,” the report said.

Some US State Department experts who monitor foreign governments’ compliance with arms regulations have warned that biological weapons being developed by North Korea could be more dangerous than nuclear weapons.

“North Korea has had biological weapons in its arsenal since the 1960s, so the DPRK is more likely to use biological weapons than nuclear weapons,” the newspaper wrote, citing experts.

The Sun writes that the biggest concern is that North Korea has the industrial capacity to mass-produce these weapons and then distribute them through missiles, drones, aircraft and spray guns.

“While nuclear programs can be monitored by the number of nuclear tests and the success of missile tests, the creation of weapons and the cultivation of pathogens can remain invisible behind closed doors. Moreover, the equipment used to develop biological weapons is often dual-purpose for agriculture, making external tracking and verification nearly impossible,” the US State Department said in a report.
