Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy could lead to severe restrictions on the population.

Ordinary Ukrainian consumers can feel them already in July-August this year. During the heating season, Ukraine must return 2 GW of capacity, of which, at best, 300-500 MW of generation before the summer peak of consumption (July-August). Director of the Energy Research Center Alexander Kharchenko spoke about this.

According to his information, the total loss of generating capacity due to missile attacks in Ukraine at the end of March was 23%, and taking into account the attacks in April it could reach 35-40%. And to cover 98% of daily consumption by the heating season, it is necessary not only to import electricity to the maximum, but also to restore 2 GW of thermal generation capacity.

Unfortunately, we can now state that approximately another 1.5 GW will return to us no earlier than one and a half to two years,” he said.

Kharchenko added that as of March 31 this year, Ukraine’s energy system could provide 75% of the projected daily maximum consumption during the 2024/25 heating season, excluding electricity imports. In addition, 87% of the projected maximum daily consumption during the 2024/25 heating season is subject to maximum imports.

These are the numbers that came out before the last attack on April 11. That is, in fact, you can cut off 10-12%* from each of these indicators,” the analyst said.

He also noted that to restore the capacity of the unified energy system, Ukraine needs about $5 billion. for the next three to five years.

Let us remind you that the general director of the YASNO company Sergei Kovalenko called on Ukrainians to save electricity during the evening peak hours – from 19.00 to 22.00. He called for saving light every day throughout 2024.
