The new government should be formed by some kind of coalition of parties that received a total majority of votes in parliament following the results of the elections held in November last year. This coalition has not yet been formed – negotiations between parties often take many months – and until a new government emerges, the country is led by an old man led by Mark Rutte.
The far-right Freedom Party, led by Geert Wilders, who is believed to be more than skeptical about supporting Ukraine, received the most mandates in the November elections.
His party still doesn’t have enough votes to govern alone, and reconciling his position with the priorities of other parties is difficult.
In March, Wilders said he was no longer pushing to become prime minister; at the same time, the influence of his party on the policies of the future government will one way or another be significant.
