Animals were discovered last year living in dirt, many dehydrated, malnourished or infested with parasites.
A couple from Nice have been given a one-year suspended sentence for keeping dozens of animals in cruel conditions. The BBC reported it.
The reason is that a 68-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man keep 159 cats and seven dogs in their 80 square meter apartment.
The animals were identified in 2023, when a police officer responded to a complaint about a dispute between a couple. Entering the apartment, he discovered that in addition to the man and woman, more than a hundred animals lived in the house.
They are infested with parasites, dehydrated and malnourished. Officers found at least four dead animals in the bathroom.
It is known that the woman took the first three cats and the same number of dogs from her parents in 2018, and then brought home about 30 more animals from an abandoned house not far from her apartment. These animals then multiplied.
The homeowner told the court his animals were the “love of his life” but he was “messed up”.
A psychiatric evaluation diagnosed him with “Noah syndrome” – a psychological need to save animals even if he couldn’t do it properly.
Because of this, the couple, a 68-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man, were also given a permanent pet ban order. They were ordered to pay more than €150,000 to charities and animal rights organizations.
It was previously reported that in Britain, workers at a wildlife hospital were surprised when a woman brought a fluffy pompom from a hat for treatment.
