There are plans to build 16 refugee centers with more than 6,000 beds in several areas of Berlin, and an additional 1,000 beds will soon be added at the former Tegel airport. This was announced by the mayor of the city, Kai Wegner, writes Berlin.de.

We are talking about container-type houses that can accommodate 6,130 people.

It is planned to build 16 new container centers in 2025 and 2026. The smallest facility has a capacity of 150 seats, the largest – 620 seats.

It is reported that these will be one, two, and three-story buildings that will be used as dormitories and individual apartments.

The refugee center on the site of the former airport in Tegel is planned to be expanded by 1,000 places – new places should appear there in the summer of 2024.

There are currently around 3,900 refugees from Ukraine and around 540 asylum seekers at the arrival center in Tegel. It plans to build six new large tents on the airport grounds.

It is planned that the refugee center on the territory of the former airport will operate until December 31, 2025, after which the facilities will be dismantled.

There are currently around 12,000 emergency accommodation centers in Berlin, but the authorities plan to close them down over time.

It was previously reported that only a fifth of Ukrainian refugees in Germany planned to return to Ukraine.
