The SBU press center reported this today, March 27.
The agents’ special attention area included army units providing protection to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, data on the Defense Forces in the Poltava region, as well as the Kiev TV tower and the capital’s thermal power plant, the report says.
The attackers tried to locate Ukrainian military bases and then send the occupiers the appropriate coordinates to adjust air attacks.
To covertly collect intelligence, one of the Russian agents got a job as a freight forwarder in an Odessa company that supplies food to units of the Defense Forces, the SBU notes.
Another person involved collected information about the technical condition of the Kyiv TV tower after the shelling in March 2022, and also photographed the appearance of one of the thermal power plants, which provides electricity and heat to a significant part of the capital region.
According to available data, the aggressor needed this information to make a decision on adjusting repeated or carrying out new attacks on the local thermal power plant and television tower, the SBU noted.
It is noted that the intelligence activity of Russian agents was exposed in a timely manner and gradually documented. Measures have also been taken to secure the bases of the Defense Forces and the protection of critical infrastructure has been strengthened.
At the final stage of the special operation, both attackers were caught in the act when they were spying on potential “targets” for the invaders, the SBU reported.
According to the investigation, the enemy henchmen turned out to be:
- process engineer at a food industry enterprise in Odessa;
- 24-year-old from Kiev.
At the end of January this year, they were remotely recruited by a FSB personnel officer for Moscow and the Moscow region. His identity has already been established by the Security Service, the SBU notes. “Both agents acted separately from each other and received monetary rewards from Russia for cooperation in favor of the aggressor country.
During searches in the apartment of the detainees, the following was confiscated:
- mobile phones caught red-handed by the FSB;
- bank cards to which Russian funds were received.
Both defendants were informed of suspicion under Part 2 of Art. 111 of the Criminal Code (high treason committed under martial law). They are in custody and face life imprisonment.
