According to U.S. officials, Ukraine has long insisted that the Pentagon provide ATACMS missiles, which have a range of more than 180 miles (about 290 km) and could enhance Ukraine’s ability to strike Russian troops in Crimea.
Pentagon officials have previously insisted that the US military should retain all of its long-range ATACMS missiles for its military needs. But the Pentagon is now open to providing longer-range MANPADS thanks to progress in acquiring the latest Precision Strike systems. That removes a major obstacle to providing long-range missiles, although officials declined to say whether Biden would send them, the article said.
On March 12, the White House announced a new package of military aid for Ukraine worth $300 million.
This is the first arms package from the United States this year – the last time such an announcement was at the end of December.
The new package included artillery shells, HIMARS ammunition, air defense missiles and other equipment. Armaments will be provided from the United States.
The Pentagon expects it to arrive at the Armed Forces of Ukraine as soon as possible. Residual funds previously approved by Congress were used to finance the package.
However, the Pentagon emphasized that the United States does not yet have the money to replenish its own weapons reserves.
